HERS is an acronym for Home Energy Rating System. A HERS rating is the process by which a HERS index is calculated. The HERS index is the industry standard by which a home's efficiency is measured.
WF Rogel LLC, a certified Home Energy Rater, assesses the energy efficiency of a home through software modeling, inspection, verification and testing. The lower the number, the more efficient the home. The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that a typical resale home scores 130 on the HERS index, while a new standard home is awarded a rating of 100. Many towns on Long Island have mandated new homes be built with a HERS index of 70 or less. A home with a HERS index of 70 is 30% more efficient than a standard new home.
